Normally, I’d steer clear of such destinations, preferring the road less traveled. What makes Cairns different, however, is its ability to weave these tourist elements into a surprisingly cohesive and utterly relaxing experience.
The "Vibe" of Cairns
From my perspective, the true magic of Cairns lies in its "vibe." It’s a palpable atmosphere that allows the city to sidestep the frantic energy often found in other tourist hubs. The CBD is wonderfully flat and walkable, offering a diverse culinary scene, including the vibrant Rusty's Market. The airport is conveniently close, and the city boasts a cosmopolitan mix of people, from well-heeled travelers to working holidaymakers and even locals from the Torres Strait Islands. What this really suggests is that a city doesn't need to be a sprawling metropolis to offer a high quality of life; sometimes, a well-managed, relaxed environment can be far more appealing.
I've explored the surrounding islands, the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest canopy via cable car, and the scenic train to Kuranda. Yet, as I reflect, the most profound takeaway from Cairns is its prevailing sense of calm. It’s a place where the daily routine feels unhurried, and there's an unspoken invitation to simply "be you." If there's a parallel dimension, I sincerely hope that version of myself is living that best Cairns life, clad in a Hawaiian shirt, sipping cold brew, and fully embracing that incredible vibe.
